I need a new phone. I've been due an upgrade for at least 10 months now and been too lazy to do anything about it

(Well, I've also been wary as right now I'm best sticking with my texts-heavy tariff as that's what I do most, but if I start using my mobile more for business I might not want to be tied to that for 12 months... but I've been using that as a dithering excuse for ages and it'd probably take 12 months for me to make up my mind to change it, so it's not that much of an issue)

Anyway, my phone is now two bleeps away from total demise and so I need to decide on a new one. I don't need any advice on networks (O2 has it's faults but in all I've been very happy with them and most of the people I talk to the most are with them so I'm not switching. Not that I'm going to tell them that when I see what I can blag, of course) But I would appreciate any views on handsets.

I know I want media messaging, as it seems silly not to as it's not exactly going to go away. And a camera, because I am a sheep and swayed by things that I am told are cool by advertisers. But I'd like to know if there's other phone related stuff that people have found useful\useless\bloody annoying\vital\not worth the bother. Or whether there's things that it's worth grabbing now as they're going to become vital before my next upgrade, or aren't worth bothering with now as they're about to become obsolete (it's now well over a year since I worked in the mobiles industry so all my knowlegde is probably pretty much useless)

Also any advice on manufacturers... I know I'm likely to end up sticking with Nokia just out of habbit, but any words of wisdom or warning would be much appreciated.

(By the way, Patrick, would deceased mobiles be an option for Deadtech? Or are they all whisked away far too efficiently these days?)

Sony Ericsson T610. No contest. I have a T68i which I've had for over a year and it just works. It's easy to use and very intuitive. The neat little clip on MP3 player is sex on a stick. [livejournal.com profile] lisaparratt has a T610 which is just an upgrade of the T68i with more toys. Again it just works. I'm going to upgrade mine to a T610 as it's (a) kewler than my current phone (especially in the gaming department) and (b) compatible with all my add on toys. Best thing is they are obtainable for nowt.

I've been on O2 and using Ericssons for years and I don't see a need to change. I've used other phones and providers and basically it's better the devil you know.

Amazing - I have said pretty much the same (and I have the mp3 player! - new one is rather pricey though...) and at the same time...

Hello...found this post on my "friendsfriends" list (its a dull day at work!), but seeing as I work for "one" of the mobile networks - the one you are on, in fact, I may be able to help...

Handsets first - if you want a cameraphone go for either a Nokia 7250i or SonyEricsson T610. I have the latter and cannot recommend it enough. The Nokia is good, but doesn't have Bluetooth (useful and more reliable than infrared for sending pictures and the like). Picture quality on the T610 is much better, too, but the camera struggles a bit without decent light.

Best suggestion is to get a phone shop to demo both phones for you.

I do have a t shirt with an 8210 inside on it somewhere... but if you get offered money or a better phone for giving yours back then go for it...
lots of love

Tesco did a thing where you could give them your old phone and get loads of reward points

if you end up with the old phone spare Help The Aged are glad of them for re-cycling, as with printer cartridges and old spectacles

and since you spend a lot ot time driving about it might be worth considering any package which gives you a hands-free for the car since the law is changing soon (on my birthday!) and it will become an offence to ~hold~ and use a mobile whilst sitting in the driver's seat with the engine running

I didn't think of that - I have a handsfree but not a particularly good one. In fact, I shall have to ensure that if I upgrade to anything other than a Nokia they're prepared to give me the full package as all my chargers and stuff will be useless. I shall have to see what I can get out of them with the "I have started a small business and am becoming more dependant upon my mobile" line...

Might be time for a trip to Carphone Warehouse for a little comparitive pricing so I can go in well armed.
