1. I need to renew my Norton antivirus/internet security subscription. However am loath to do so as the autoupdate has been wonky for months and I've had to download updated security and virus definitions manually, so I don't see the point in paying for something that's half broken. I could go out and buy the latest package, and am happy to do so if needs be as all my artwork is on my computer (obviously I have back-ups, but I can't afford to back up every 10 minutes when I'm working on something new) but obviously don't want to do so if it'll be a waste of money. So... is there a free downloadable anti-virus \ firewall package (or seperates) that will match up or be better to the Norton package? Or even a different one I should look at buying?

2. I have a bunch of old records to sell on my parents behalf. I don't really want to eBay them as I have no experience as a seller and more importantly don't know all the correct terminology for a proper description. However I don't exactly want to give them away as some could be worth something (only £5-£10 for the best ones according to the price lists, but they add up) Anyone know of where I can find record shops or fairs in the Leeds area that would be interested in 60's\70's vinyl? (I know I'll only get a fraction of the paper cost that way, but I'd rather sell the lot somewhere I can hand them over in person than be trying to work out practical ways of posting them elsewhere)

3. Will be in London on Saturday the 24th, with an option of staying till Monday (I think). I'll probably be spending some of that time with my cousin, but would anyone like to meet up? (Whether it's cos I know you but haven't seen you in ages, or just to say "hello!"... and don't worry this isn't fishing for crash space as I have family down there who I am staying with - would just be nice to meet some random peeps)

4. After some advice from an "informed source" am definitely NOT applying for my job when the new desciption comes out (if it ever does - things are that uncertain right now) so am jobhunting in earnest. Hopefully will have 6 weeks paid leave in which to do so before I officially become dolescum, but if anyone has any advice re. graphics\database positions (specifically how to get good ones) I'm all ears :-)

5. My stomach hurts. I am hoping this is in the nature of a 24 hour doodah and will not have any effect on Flocking tomorrow...

1. Norton is just so much bloatware it's waaay too much of a burden on anyones system. Free ones are quite often distributed through PC magazine coverdiscs. Go for Zone Alarm as an adequate firewall and anti-spy software like spybot S&D.

2. Try Vinyl Tap http://www.vinyltap.co.uk

http://www.grisoft.com for AVG anti-virus, http://www.kerio.com for firewall, not forgeting http://www.lavasoft.de for spyware removal. I don't recommend the popular choice of Zonealarm firewall because though it's good when it works it's horrible to get rid of when it doesn't. I won't allow Norton near any of my machines as it's dog-slow bug-ridden bloatware.

I think AVG is rubbish compared to Norton for finding viruses, but it is much less of a system hog.

They've already said what I was gonna say...

Norton=pants. Even PC World stopped selling it with their machines.

Try AVG. *nods*.

*many hugs*

Relics on New Briggate is where I buy my vinyl. Their sister shop, Cassady's in York is where much of my vinyl came from in my university years. They seem to know their stuff but I'm since I've never sold them anything I don't know about their pricing. They seem fair people though.

Oh yes. If I can have a listing of what there is I may take some directly off of your hands.

I think I must be one of the few people in the world who has never had a problem with Norton so that's what I have stuck with. I tried Mcafee for a year once but found it to be problematic and nowhere near as useful or user friendly as Norton.

And for a free firewall I use Sygate Personal Firewall (www.sygate.com). It's very simple to set up and configure. I don't know if you can still download it from their website but it still updates from time to time if you already have a copy of the software. I can send you the file (or upload somewhere sensible for you) to install it if you want.

I use sygate an'all- they don't paticularly advertise the free firewall on their site though (its hidden behind a couple of links)- they try to push the pay stuff at you instead

Vinyl - you are MUCH better selling it off individually, you might lose a half to 3/4 in value selling it to a shop as a job lot.

It would probably be well worth your while buying some 12" card record sleeves. Postage might be £2 a record or something but good quality old vinyl, esp collectable, can do well. It really depends what.

These are what I got a lot of DJ promos in, and £2.95 for 10 is pretty good value to me.

I'm definitely in London that weekend. [livejournal.com profile] libellum is coming up on the Friday and we're supposedly going to the Royal Academy to see the summer exhibition and possibly the Art Deco one, sitting in the bar for a while to watch the live jazz, and then going to Gossips for Tenebrae. No idea what I'm doing the rest of that weekend, but if you wanted to come up a night earlier, you'd be very welcome to join us. :)

Obv, then, I'd love to see you. Bring photies!!
