Is it just me, or does anyone else this might be an elaborate cover-up to save REM from the shame of facing another major hit after "Shiny Happy People" nearly completely destroyed their Indie-cred?

(You have to admit, it does sound a hell of a lot like Michael Stipe's voice\lyrics)

But I love it.

If it was Michael Stipe, I'd hate it.

Therefore it can't be Michael Stipe.

Easy! :-)

And they definitely aren't his lyrics. Too good for one thing, and Tears For Fears recorded it 20 years ago, bless 'em.

*shame* I never realised that it was a cover!

(I've been too busy feeling smug for actually knowing who it was recorded it at people that I never actually thought to check who did it first... and putting together conspiracy theories, of course)

Besides, everyone knows you have no musical taste :-p

The original is absolute shite too.

I prefer the Alex Parks cover to the Gary Jules anyway. :-D

This particular cover is by Gary Jules, I believe.

It's cheating to point out that it#'s not actually him, and against all the rule of conspracy theorising ;-)

How have you been anyway? You've been silent (LJwise at least) for ages.

Hmmm... are you sure ~you're~ noy Michael Stipe?

I not been too bad, thanks. Bit busy at work to post all that much to LJ, but still all is good at the minute, so can't complain.

Ah you made the same mistake as me then, thinking it was Mr Stipe.

I woke up a few weeks ago go to the radio with this, and I must admit I'm very disappointed it's not Stipey.

To be quite honest I think it's better than the original Tears for Fears version, although the Flat Capped Muppet who sings this version should be kept hidden from the public eye.

I thought it was him at first too. And I also think it's better than the original even though I love the original too having been a teenager in the 80's and all. In fact I was so enjoying listening to Flock of Seagulls in your and Sam's car last week that I went all dreamy. :)

Hearing this version of "Mad World" prompted me to dig out and re-appraise my Tears for Fears collection- the albums "The Hurting" and "Songs from the Big Chair, plus a load of singles.

I'm happy to say that most of it still sounds good, depite the 20 year gap since I bought most of this stuff. One thing that does sound a bit odd, though, is the single "The Way You Are" which I think was only a minor hit, and hasn't been re-issued on any compilations, etc, since.

Am I the only chap who remembers this song, perchance?
