I've often wondered that too. I might post a one-letter LJ entry and see how many replies it gets. I might give "R" a try, it's always been one of my favourites.
Short ones tend to be questions and long ones tend to be statements or descriptions. Longer ones tend to tell you a lot of info too, short ones pique the tastebuds as to what they might be about, esp if one suspects there is a tasty morsel of gossip hidden underneath that requires prizing out.
