So, I've been on a bit of a vampire kick recently, after re-reading Hellsing for the umpteenth time. (April 2010!) And I found a handy site with some interesting looking recommendations for good contemporary vampire novels.

A few days later, we were making an emergency trip to my parents as my Dad had managed to break his shoulder (which is not only incredibly painful but almost impossible to do without breaking a whole load of other bones along with it). So I stopped off at Borders to pick up a couple of seasons of CSI to keep Dad entertained while he's on the mend.

Remembering my list, I also took a wander through the horror section. More than half of which seemed to have been transformed into a suspiciously new and ~sparkly~ 'Paranormal Romance' section*, but I soldiered on through to the proper horror at the back. () Couldn't find any of the books I was looking for, but found a few new collections of Sci-fi and horror short stories and grabbed those instead.

When I was paying, the assistant asked if there had been anything I hadn't been able to find, and I said there were a couple of vampire books I'd been looking to pick up but I'd find them some other time.**

"Oh, were those the Twilight ones?" she asked.

I thought my the sheer icy scorn of my withering, Hell-has-frozen-over "No" was punishment enough. But obviously Karma did not agree, and now the Universe has smote Borders on my behalf. A little extreme perhaps, but still, I feel, justified.

Ironically, when I wandered into Borders in town today to pick through the closing down sale, I found a shiny new copy of Fevre Dream at 20% off.

But they had no Kim Newman so I still have no sympathy.

* To be fair, the last time I looked the 'normal' romance section was 90% fangs and 10% fairy porn... at the time I found it amusing.

** i.e. buy them off Amazon

I'm going to miss Borders, yes they were overpriced at times, but sometimes I was prompted to buy a book there and then as opposed to ordering it on the internet and waiting as I love to buy books in person. I went and got an annotated version of Dracula which is a massive hardback (and would not have known about it if I hadn't seen it) Also got a Douglas Adams compilation for D for Xmas and some New Moon trading cards (yes I am sad, I adore the twilight books for being so addictive- although now I've read the True Blood books, thats so much better and contains the same kind of ideas- just for grown ups)

Borders was also the only place that was open late in Warrington town centre where you could just kill an hour or two on a wet sunday if you didn't want to go home!

Joking aside I shall miss Borders a lot - it used to frustrate me immensely at times (I seem to remember a time when anthologies got filed under the name of the editor, rather than neatly grouped together at the end, and right now they seem rather confused as to the difference between Scifi and fantasy) but there were a lot of good things in there. I was very surprised to hear they were going under, to be honest, as they always seemed to be the best around and always busy. Which makes me all the more certain it was down to Universal vengeance ;-)

Ooh did you/are you enjoying 'Fevre dream?' It really didn't grab me which was a shame as I do normally like his stuff, bah! xxx

It is sitting in a bag underneath my desk at the minute as I only just grabbed it this lunchtime, but I shall let you know!

I wonder if there's any way of making all the Twilight fans in the world read Lost Souls?
Lots of love

I am confused by any plan involving Twilight fans that doesn't include the words 'Burn them. Burn them all.'

I'm obviously going soft. You are of course, as always, entirely right.

I was planning on working my way through the list, but if you want to recommend anything with a vampire-y slant that would be brilliant. (Or even not vampire-y but just recommended.)

Ooh, and I've finally got round to reading Body of Glass (I had a big backlog and couldn't concentrate enough to read when I was ill) and really enjoying it :-)

I dislike Borders in town as I can never reach the books I want as their shelves are too high (what with only being 5' 2"), plus the last few times I went they never filed the books in the correct order, so I would just give up and buy online (where I can reach the virtual shelves.. LOL)

That's not something I have a problem with (being too tall for my own good, or at least to feel happy in anything other than flats which cuts me off from most of the pretty shoes in the world.) But I can see how that would be incredibly frustrating!

The Sookie Stackhouse books are amazing. The awesome thing is, there are loads of differneces between the series and the books, so i can get away with reading the books, whilst in TV land we're still on series 1!!! <3 Eric.

I met a twilighter on Sunday at the BBC, but you probably already read about that LOL

Ooh, yes, do want to read those. I've started watching the series so may wait until I've seen it before starting on the books though, just so the two don't get mixed up in my head!

I read the first Sookie book as I was distracted by the cover in Borders and when the tv started I got very excited, but I find myself flipping through the book when the adverts are on comparing bits. I have got used to Terah now though after being very irritated by her for weeks. I'm also sad enough to have ordered a twilight top and a true blood top from hot topic as the choice over here is awful. Also welcome any other vampire book suggestions- i'm mad about most vamp books apart from Poppy Z Brite and Anne 'boring' Rice. Want to get the Dracula sequel by Dacre Stoker as that sounds interesting too but I can't seem to find it cheap in Asda anymore, mainly because its not a christmas autobiography.

Oh and by the way, i don't fancy being burnt for being a twilight fan- should I get flameproof clothing :-)

I've got the first Sookie book on audio - and "listened" first before I watched it - it's pretty darn accurate considering what a hash they usually make book > film.

There was a time when I cou;dn't possibly walk past a book shop without going in there to check whether they had any vampire books I hadn't read.

It's a shame really, because the section got smaller and smaller, and over-run with Buffy (as was then, but I'm sure it's same now with twilight et al) - and the "proper" vampire literature never anywhere to be found.

Shame really.

Others to look out for: Mick Farren, Steven Spruill, Freda Warrington, Brian Lumley - but you'll be lucky on all counts.

I consider myself very lucky I have them all on my shelf :)
