So, tomorrow I'm starting a new job. Or rather an old one. Having made nearly everyone redundant over the past couple of months, the magazine called me up last week to offer me my old job back. My direct manager and the managing director are both among the departed, so the design team is just me and one full time person. It's going to be interesting - there's a lot less people so it's going to be even busier than before, but apparently the fact that there are no real "departments" left means there's a lot more common sense practices going on. I've got an initial 3 month contract anyway, so I'll have a chance to see how much it's changed. It's quite flattering that they approached me, anyway - I'd called them about a month ago to see if they wanted any illustrations of a freelance basis, but everything was up in the air then, and by now I wasn't really expecting to hear anything further, much less this. And when I was in for the "interview"\chat, several people said how pleased they'd be to have me back, but especially to have my cartoons back!

I shall also (hopefully) be enrolled as a member of the Association of Illustrators tomorrow (I feel all professional!) As soon as my membership is confirmed I'll be ordering their handbook on how to promote your work, and a list of other magazine publishers who comission illustrations that I can go pester. I'm also trying to get some sci-fi\fantasy type illustrations I have lodged in my head onto paper (or the screen) before Dragoncon (which is coincidentally also in 3 months time) so I now have a sort of informal deadline going... I hereby give me three months to see how much of a commercial and\or personal success I can make out of illustration. Then there will be decisions to be made.

Of course, having decided that I've spent the past week writing instead. Pffft! FFS!

I may even get my website revamp up this weekend, although that's increasingly looking as realistic as fairy dust at the end of the rainbow...

I'm actually starting to get a bit nervous now - there's a lot of aspects of magazine work I haven't touched for the past couple of months - I hope it all comes back quickly!

I'm not sure... the application form is just half a photocopied A4 sheet, so on those grounds I'm guessing flashing ceremonies are pretty much ruled out too. I may go and stand in a bucket of soapy frogs for 10 minutes in my own little attempt to initiate the new girl...
