It's not so much cultural belief as individual perception of self I'm interested in. If you ask most people to put their finger on their nose and then to stretch out their arm, they'll perceive their finger as moving away from them, even though the finger and the nose are both just as much 'you'. Similarly most people, if you ask them, perceive their feet as being 'further away' than their stomach.
I'm just curious as to whether this is because the head is where four of the five major sense organs are located (which seems most likely) or whether there are any other factors, including whether our image of the brain as seat of consciousness does influence our association of the head as primarily being the location of the self. (Long time curiosity, not something I've ever had time to look into particularly deeply...)
